Who we are

My wife, Cori, and I run Ashby Farms, and we keep approximately 500 beehives across 16 apiaries in the Burlington, NC, area. We are NC‑USDA Certified Honey Producers and NC Certified Sourwood Honey Producers.

Honey is a reflection of what the bees feed on (nectar) and can vary within just a few miles. Here in the NC Piedmont, our main nectar sources are tulip poplar, blackberry, and clover. Our local wildflower honey consists mainly of tulip poplar, resulting in a dark, almost confectionary‑sweet honey that our customers come back for time and time again!

During the mid‑summer months, we take some of our beehives to the NC Mountains, where we target sourwood honey. Sourwood trees grow most densely from North Georgia to Southern Virginia… east of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Sourwood is one of the most difficult‑to‑get honeys but wins many honey‑tasting contests. The sourwood nectar flow is weather‑dependent, elevation‑dependent, and location‑dependent (density), making it one of the toughest honeys in the world to produce. For those of us certified sourwood producers, we take great pride in our product due to the difficulty (and, in some years, the failure) of obtaining it.

Starting this year, we’re offering tupelo honey, produced from tupelo trees located in the swamps of South Georgia and North Florida. Tupelo honey is light‑colored, with a vibrant bouquet in both aroma and flavor, and is known throughout the South for its timeless taste!

All of our honey is raw and unfiltered. It’s as close to “straight from the hive” as we can get! We thank you for your support!
